Here's an idea for "sandbox challenge maps" (like Agrarian Skies):
What if you had to supply a continuous stream of items for each quest? Items wouldn't work as a reward for such a quest (unless you got them continuously, but then it would just be like a HQM repeating quest), so what about unlocking recipes?
So that you can't cheat it by supplying items only when you want to craft the thing, there would be a backlog of items. So you can't build up a big stock and then supply them right before crafting, there would also be a maximum rate the quest would accept items at, which would take effect after it was initially completed.
You could still feed it tons of items, then forget about it. To prevent that there would be a maximum surplus of fed items.
An example task: "Supply 1 iron ingot per minute, with a maximum backlog of 120, maximum surplus of 5, and maximum rate of 4/minute. Unlocks: redstone furnace."
You would need to supply 120 iron, and then 1 iron ingot per minute. If you ever fell behind, the amount you'd need to feed to catch up would be capped at 120, but it would take you at least 30 minutes to catch up. As long as the quest is fed, you can craft redstone furnaces.
