cant smelt soul sand?

I see references all over the place to smelt soul sand in a furnace to get Vile Dust. Im running unleashed, and for the life of me cannot get the stuff to smelt. tried vanilla, TE, ic2 furnaces...nothing will process it. am i missing something? I see soul shards and cages, i know the mod is active...

If I recall correctly the recipe was changed in 1.5 and is the same in 1.6.2 Look here for more info about the changes.

Soul Shard

You make a Soul Shard by creating the following shape in world:

AAEAA
AENEA
ENGNE
AENEA
AAEAA

A=Air
E=End Stone
N=Netherrack
G=Glowstone

Right click on the glowstone with a diamond to receive your shard

This shard of corrupted diamond seems to be able to absorb the souls of monsters you kill (while in your hotbar). Right click on a Soul Cage to imprison the essence of the monsters trapped within into the cage. It seems to also have a strange reaction to monster spawners!

That's for Soul Shards from 1.4.x. In 1.5.x, Soul Shards changed the way you make the shards, which you can see how here.
