Hello guys, I wanted to ask why I can't allocate more ram to minecraft. My pc has 4gb of ram but the best I can put from FTB launcher is 1gb.

My PC is a laptop with this component:

IntelCore i7-2630QM 2GHz with Turbo Boost up to 2.9GHz
NVidia Geforce GT 540M, Up to 1760MB Turbo Chache
4GB DDR3 Ram

Sorry for the bad english, I use a translator and my own knowledges in english.

3Gb of ram will probably set aside by your computer to be used by other programs. Try using java codes instead of the sliding bar

That is because you have 32bit java installed and the launcher will not allow you to allocate more than 1gb of ram. You need a 64bit os and 64bit java to allocate more but with only 4gb in total you will most likely have problems if you do.

If you are trying to play the new 1.6 packs you will need more memory unless you disable some of the mods. I would suggest disabling opis mod first and then thaumcraft, ars magicka 2 and biomes 'o' plenty if required.

The mod author is working on a fix relating to map writer using a lot of memory.

Thank you so much both, I'll try to disable the mod that you tell me one by one, I hope it works.

Anyway in my system properties I have a 64bit OS.
Do I Have to install java 64bit, or not?

If you would have provide a log we would have been able to see that you had a 64bit OS. Yes if your OS is 64bit get the 64bit version of Java and you will be able to allocate more than 1GB in the launcher. Be sure to remove all the 32bit versions as well as any other 64bit versions except 7 update 45.

There's actually a new feature in the launcher that selects a preferred version of Java (automatically).
I'd like to see if it will prefer 64 bit over 32 bit.
This is what it looks like in the console
Code:
The FTB Launcher has found the following Java versions installed:
Java Version: 1.7.0_45 sorted as: 1.7.0_45 64 Bit Java at : C:\Program Files\Java\jre7\bin\java.exe
Java Version: 1.7.0_45 sorted as: 1.7.0_45 64 Bit Java at : C:\Windows\system32\java.exe
FTB Launcher Prefers: Java Version: 1.7.0_45 sorted as: 1.7.0_45 64 Bit Java at : C:\Program Files\Java\jre7\bin\java.exe

Thanks to everyone, I solved my problem by unistalling Java 32 bit and by istalling the 64x version, because I have a 64Bit OS. Now I set the ram at 2,25 Gb or higer and FTB run again :) (at 140 fps, that is very high for me ahahah)
