I'm trying to test some things and rather not grind out a lot of things and when i do the /give command, it denies me permission.

You probably found out by now. That only works if you enabled cheats when you created the world. A workaround is opening to lan in game menu and enabling cheats

One option is to create a separate test world with cheats enabled.
