Lately a lot of my friends have been getting into Minecraft and FTB. So I decided to set up a server. However it's rather frustrating due to the lack of a computer to use as a server host, so I can't leave it open at all times due to it being on my laptop. However my family has a rather old computer which I'm free to use. If I upgraded the ram on it to 4 gigs would that work for a decent private server?

Thanks in advance!

Yeah definitely. Which I've heard limits the ability to dedicate over 4g of ram to one application. Which is lucky because thats supposedly as much as I can actually put in this computer

Well, theoretically, if your motherboard has PAE functionality, you can install more than 4GB, but that isn't very common in older motherboards. Because you're running Windows, you'll only be able to realistically allocate 1.5GB of ram to your server, so you might have load issues if you have more than 5 players on at once, and world generation speeds will not be the greatest, but I wouldn't see any problem other than occasional lag.

Hmmm OK. Its probably not worth it then due to having about ten people playing. Thanks for your help
