Buildcraft gate condtionions?

TL;DR: What do all the conditionals on buildcraft gates actually do?

I am trying to automate my something in regrowth. I want items to flow through a set of pipes. I am trying to use buildcraft gates for it. I am getting stumped on how to do it though.

Right now I have a basic gate checking a jabba barrel. If the barrel has items in it the gate sends out a red pipe signal. On another set of pipes are two basic gates. One gate is set to "closed" on red pipe signal. The other gate is set to "closed" when there is no red pipe signal.

With that setup when a item arrives at the pipe junction it is popping out of the pipe instead of going down either of pipes with gates on it. Why is it acting this way? What is the correct usage of "closed", "open", or any of that gate stuff?

Found out I could set up a iron pipe to do what i wanted if i placed the basic gate right on it.
I am still curious about all the different settings and what they actually do though.
