Tip for getting stone blocks, make a TiC chisel and eat smooth stone with it, yup right click so it makes the eating noise but it will also make a stone block which you can mine and it wont turn into cobble.
Dont use cobblestone mobs love to grief it, dirt is much better until you can make stone bricks.
