Block that can "hold an item" - 1.7.10 custom modpack

Hi, was wondering if anyone knew a block that could act as a player holding an item. I want to use the ring of growth from actually additions to automate growth in a farm but cant seam to find any block that will activate it for me, autonomus activators dont work.
