Over the last few days I've been getting into big reactors. I've been messing around with them in my test world and I seem to have found a design that I like 7x7x5 with 5 fuel rods in an X shape in the middle. Now, I have a couple of questions. Firstly, what is the most efficient cooling liquid that is not gellid cryothem or whatever its called. I don't have access to that. Also, when my energy cells are full, should I shut it off and what would be the best way for me to do that or should I leave it running?

liquid ender is next best thing you only need 20 or so buckets there is no difference from flowing/still blocks as for leaveing it on or not you could dial back the rods to lower the output to suit your needs and lower them as your power useage grows

Gelled Cryotheum just needs some Nitor to get going, plus bliz powder which is basically redstone infused snowballs. It's not THAT hard to get going.

The next best would be Resonant Ender, however if you are playing on Agrarian Skies, it has a rather dangerous side-effect... leaks can cause warping, and because you're in a skyblock the most likely place you're going to end up is over the void.

That's not a problem for me. I'm playing good old modded survival. But what about question #2 [should I leave it running and if not, how would I shut it off and turn it back on again w/o computers]?

Minefactory Reloaded has the answer in the Programmable Rednet Controller (PRC). In effect, you can create a Rednet signal block for Big Reactors to send and receive signals. You accept a signal which is a percentage of the internal energy buffer filled, and output on a different color channel that percentage to the control rods. So as you get your buffer closer and closer to be full, your control rods will be more and more activated until finally it shuts itself off automatically at full energy. The best part is that it auto-throttles your power until you find a happy equilibrium to go with your energy demands.

I don't know how to do that! I really don't know much about the PRC. Can you show me or explain how I would do this? Or link a good tutorial for it?

I'm using OpenComputers myself to control my BigReactor. Currently I only have a monitoring program where I can also raise/lower the rods to control fuel consumption and power output but I'm also planning to let it automatically monitor my energy cells and then automatically raise the rods as soon as the energy cells are getting below some thresshold.
