Details of the issue I would like to update the pack on my private server to a newer version. Does the launcher do that automatically or will I need to find the file somewhere else? Also if it does how would I know when it updates?

I figured it out. If you find the modpack you want to update the server on, click on more information. On that page will be the current versions. Click the +1 next to the modpack version you want to update to and then you will see the server version available for download.
