Best Y level for saltpeter?

I made a desert mystcraft age, and I have started to find saltpeter under the surface. It seems quite rare, but I was only just under the layer of sandstone at the time (around Y 60-ish). So I was wondering, at what level does saltpeter spawn the most?

I used to find a lot near lava level (beta pack), but not having seen a single one for quite some time, I thought it didn't exist anymore.
