Best way to catch loose items?

About to set up my first boring machine, 2 gasoline engines into a shaft junction, into a 16:1 gearbox

I'm used to obsidian pipes, or hoppers, any decent replacement I should be using? Ultimately, these will be going to my ME network.

Well a stream of water and a hopper works. Not sure if it's the best solution performance-wise, but it sure is cheap.
