Definitely better than the ExpandedRedstone one.

Minefactory Reloaded has the "mob counter." It's "how many" rather than "how close" though.

Your best bet will probably be the Proximity Detector from ICBM, as @trajing said.
You could also try using the OpenCCSensors mod, they have a Proximity Sensor Card, I believe, that could be useful to you.
