So I am currently on a 1.7.2 server with a a very low tech / magic themed pack (Thaumcraft and Blood Magic at the core) - and I find that the original site I chose for my base is far more ... lumpy than I thought. I need to level about a square km of terrain to create the area to build what I want.

My shovel of the earthmover and wand focus: excavation are not up to the task.

So, I need magic themed mods - or to add some tech mods - that have the capabilities to work on that scale.

I plan to upgrade the server to 1.7.10 as soon as Mystcraft upgrades, and have despite the magic theme have EnderIO to power Applied Energistics (because nothing else can deal with the 20,000 dirt / cobble / smooth stone collected so far), so excursions into tech mods can be tabled.

I am avoiding buildcraft as the filler destroyed blocks rather than gathering them, I don't know if the 1.7.10 buildcraft "robots" suffer the same restrictions. But I would prefer to gather all the blocks cleared as I need them for futher construction.

the filler destroying rather than gathering is intentional because it was used as the poor-man's quarry (and a lag-fest)

you could use the AE spatial storage to move the area to another quarry for later automatic mining

KAMI tools. I recently made an awakened ichorium pickaxe which mines a whopping 25 blocks all at once. I understand that unlocking anything KAMI is a nearly impossible task because of research and is probably unfeasible. Anyway, fillers destroying blocks is a config option.

The terrasteel tool from botania function a lot like the old EE2 black matter tools. If you have a decent setup you should be able to use them.

I was considering KAMI - I saw some videos of KAMI tools being used to clear large areas fast. I *think* I have the resources in place, and a stable enough altar, to deal with the research and recipe instability.

The "destroy blocks" config option in buildcraft didn't work - not in any kind of sane way. I am most interested in the blood magic solution as that requires no changes to the modpack - which is being kept as small as possible to support some users with ... less capable machines.

fyi, the bound shovel clears a wide area to your feet. great for clearing lots of dirt/sand. just dig to where you want the new ground level and right click.

Large Area, Easy, Fast, Keep blocks are mutually exclusive..

Filler/MFFS for fast, easy, large area

Anything else for many clicks, keep blocks

I'd say either the bound shovel which, as mentioned above, clears out dirt to the level you're standing at on a right click, or the Terra Firma Rod from Botania, which requires a bit of work in Botania, but levels the area to the level you're standing on by both breaking blocks and filling in holes with dirt

You can put the arcane bore on the bottom of the base and point it down. Add Archimedes Ships and you can easily fly it into position and move it when it finishes a section.

The arcane bore's bore depth is ... very difficult to control.

you could use the blood magic advanced spell system to make a spell to dig out a large area, i believe purplementat has some videos on it

The "Big" problem with the arcane bore is, its so damned slow. and I'd need to repair the Picks by holding them in my inventory as, since TC 4.1 the Repair enchantment no longer works in-the-bore.

To get a decent amount of terrain levelling i'd need to deploy a row of them, and have a lot of spare picks to rotate through my inventory. I don't know how many picks the stave ... er, whatever its called. the one that recharges itself. I don't know how many repairing items it can keep up with.

Have not used them myself, but Rotarycraft horisontal quarry (whatever it is named) and AE2 Spatial IO Port may be the solution
