I am updating to 1.7.10. Yay! However i wanted to take a look at my modlist when updating. I have added some mods and taken away some mods, however the mods that i saw that i wanted to take a good look at would be Minimap mods.

What do you guys think are the pros and cons of each minimap mod, and what do you think is the best one.

DISCUSS!

Since I use Opis, I have mapwriter. Its awesome for giving you a world overview map. It sucks as a minimap, to me anyway. I've been using Zans minimap since rei's had issues a while ago. I just never went back to rei's. I dont know how to tell you whats best since its so subjective and there's only a few options anyway.

I've gotta go with Zans... Much cleaner look on the minimap, versatile displays, underground mode, passive mobs mode, easy one click (two if you want to select the colour) waypoint creation.
I've always liked the look and feel of Zans. (granted the larger map is a bit.. meh, but you asked about minimaps so :p)

See I always used map writer, because of opis. I saw journeymap though and thought that that looked good, but it seems that zan's it the most liked.

I'm using Zan's for the minimap and I'm using Journeymap for the worldmap
now if only there was a minimap that would allow you to categorize your waypoints into different folders and rearrange them later on...

Definitely Mapwriter

It seems to have the lowest performance impact
I like being able to see everything I've visited
I like that it requires you to explore to see stuff

The only problem is sometimes it messes up and deletes your entire map. It also doesn't like Dynamic Link Panels too much.

Both. In the right and left corners of my screen, on circular mode so the two maps look like eyes following me.

Edit: by both I mean mapwriter and voxel

My favorite at the moment is JourneyMap, the waypoint system and better minimap it got recently are absolutely beautiful. Zan's is probably the best though, as it's simple and works well enough for everything you need it for (including that amazing mob radar).

Unless you have a low amount of RAM available, that thing is way too hungry for my poor computer. It's also really fond of not saving maps if the game crashes and it has no in-world waypoints, which is horrible.

Zan is simply the best IMO due to its mob radar, cave mode and the amazing vertical awareness it gives you. If I spot a mob I want(on the mob radar), I can find it easily even if it is in a dark cave 50 blocks below me. I can also easily find my way around places like Roguelike dungeons, ensuring that I don't miss any corridors etc.

So my vote is Zan's, but I also vote to install Journeymap along side for its awesome world mapping abilities. And the two works perfectly together, Zan's waypoints are marked on the Journeymap map etc.

Zan helps a lot when you hunt for specific mob, such as Enderman or Wither Skeleton.
But Mapwriter lets you really zoom out.

I don't know if you can do this with mapwriter, but this is why I love the Zan's + Journeymap combo. Zan's zooms out to 16x16 chunks. But if I want more(when exploring around etc.) I can simply press ctrl+J and open up the Journeymap minimap as well.

this makes me wonder... wouldn't it be cool if there was a mod for GUI's?
for example you'd have 5 screens you can scroll between, and with each screen you can tell what GUI's you want in them and where
if you were to press a hotkey + a number, it'd switch over to another GUI screen where you could have another set of GUI's

so it's basically HotbarSwapper for GUI screens

Note that the most recent version of JourneyMap has a minimap about the size of Zan's in this screenshot as well, for some reason there was only this huge "small" map when that feature was added.
