Railcraft's turbines aren't a bad choice, and you can plop them down right beside a Steam Boiler and iirc they send back the water to the boiler, meaning whatever external water supply you're using for the boiler itself either has a less work to do, or none at all. The only caveat is the maintenance, as the blades of the turbine are an item that takes damage and must be periodically replaced or repaired. A bit of work with BC Pipes and gates can help there, as there's a gate conditional that shows up detecting that damage.
The turbines output MV power (128EU/t), and assuming a max size boiler running at a high enough capacity you can either run one on all four sides (Taking advantage of the water re-supplying mentioned above) or add several further away and pipe steam to them, which might allow for more turbines running off the same boiler without over-taxing your steam supply.

Geothermal generators are e very powerful way to start. They are quite cheap to make and each one produces 20EU/t. What you do need though is a pump in the nether or a mystcraft lava world to supply the lava. But that is pretty cheap to set up.
