Magmatics are TE, they'll never explode. If they don't have anywhere to send energy and their buffer is full, they'll just turn themselves off and require a crescent hammer whack to go back to working condition. As long as they keep receiving lava, and have energy to send, they'll run. Forever.

another idea is that you could use Peat fired engines. You can make Peat in a carpenter or in a crafting bench with a bucket of water. Just lay the Bog Earth down on the ground and have a water source in a 1 block radius. Think doughnut shape with water in the middle. Over time the Bog Earth will turn into Peat and when you harvest it you get dirt back. Peat burns in anything like coal but will last longer in a Peat fired engine. The Peat engine is only 1MJ/tick but lasts a while if you just want to Pulverize some items and then it will slowly fill the buffer. At 1MJ/t you won't break any speed records but it lasts for a long time which can also be nice. I never use lava since it seems to run out so fast. I use peat initially to get some early MJs going and then I switch out to converting Buildcraft Oil to Fuel.

Yeah, the old peat farms were so good, now you need to have much more infrastructure before setting one up... Here's me hoping that Sengir decides to do something about keeping peat farms relevant =]

A manual peat farm does just fine for me for my initial needs. Someone gave me the idea to use a wand of equivalent exchange to swap out Peat blocks with new bog earth to speed up the process. But that is a bit more mid game for me and I stop using peat at that point.

Early game, to me, means you can jump in without any other infrastructure. Keep in mind that to power your laser you'll need MJ, so a system using gates cannot be your very first system. Gates can be added on to your starter setup, but they're not the starter setup.

You could, technically, power that laser with a redstone engine. It would just take hours. A sterling engine with a hopper for charcoal would however work well for early game.

Peat engines are exceptionally good for centrifuge/beekeeping stuff.

I'd love to see something like Quartz Grindstone but for smelting stuff. With friction. 3 minutes per item smelted xD

If only turtles could rightclick....
I believe the author has stated he doesn't want it to be automated. As much as I'm usually for being able to do anything, and having no limiting factors, I think it should stay this way. I mean, there already is an automated macerator, it's called a macerator. This is one of the most balanced things I've seen in any mod, and I don't think it should be changed.

Just be aware: forestry biofuel will soon be nerfed.

Biofuel is not nerfed unless I remember wrong. I saw somewhere else that "saplings with lowest sappiness yields 50% of the biomass now, those with normal sappiness yields 100% and those with highest sappiness yields 150%". This sounds a buff to anyone who use forestry farm.

Unless you are aiming for super tree, cherry tree which is easily accessed with "highest sappiness" trait. Put the advanced sapling in your farm and you are going to have a lot biomass going. For 1.4.7, the high sappiness also gives a lot of fruit. I am basically sitting at 20k+ apple even my fermenter is running for 100% of time using only apple juice.

It may be a nerf to anyone using SC2 tree farm and MFR tree farm. I believe neither of them able to recognize forestry bred tree. Turtle chopper probably be ok.

On topic: I think peat engine is very good for startup if you come by some copper early game. I used them for my first few machines until I got all my TE machine up. I am also that kind of person avoid anything need manual intervention, hobby steam engine is not my style henceforth.
