Heya!

Is there a benefit of silktouch over fortune if i play with NO greg? (besides inventory space)

Is there a way to get the same, or more, out of a silktouched block than just using fortune 3 on it?

Im considering adding silktouch to my tools (particularly the hammer for coal and redstone and lapis)

Thanks!

Getting to brag to your friends that you have a rare ore sitting inside your house.

Or just keep it until you get enough lapis/xp to get looting (lapis is assuming you play with tinkers construct)

When mining with a hammer you'll definitely want to use silktouch since just the cobble can fill your bags in minutes. Also, if you pulverize redstone you have a chance at glowstone.

If I'm not mistaken, Iridium Ore comes from Greg Tech itself...

Yeah, im playing with TiC and was considering adding silk to my hammer, but if you cant macerate/pulverize/process the blocks for more materials ill stick with fortune.

Also, on the hammer it wont help much with inventory space, ill save a couple slots on redstone and such, but the bulk comes from cobble (and with the minium stone you can at least compress it, unlike normal stone).

If using a hammer I'd suggest using silk touch and then having another pick to pull out the fortune-able materials and do that when you get back home. It also helps to prolong mining trips since all ores = 1 instead of potentiall ~15+ each

With Extra Utils you can craft cobble in a 3x3 grid to compress it as well, and that's in the beta packs as well as the new ones. Personally though I plan on setting up an auto-packager system for my cobble.

What would be the advantage of silktouching the hammer besides inventory space?

For exmaple, if i had an enderpouch to my main sorting system, would it be more hinder then useful to have silktouch on the hammer?

Then you probably would be better off with fortune.

Also: if inventory space is a must, forestry backpacks are sooooooooo useful on your first mining trip (I'm a born cheater and always spawn in a woven one in my first mining trips because... Well I admit my world gen in my pack is bloated).
If you don't want to cheat one in, just craft a few miners backpacks and a diggers one. Or, alternatively, get the backpack mod, it adds... Backpacks. They hold anything but other backpacks.

Well, if you have TE, you will get a consistent 8 redstone per ore. although Fortune 3 would probably get you more. Can you get rich slag out of processing the ores you would normally fortune? It might be worth it.

But truthfully, I think fortune would be much better for you than silk touch. Although you can get ice, glass, and bookshelves with silk touch.

IT would depend on the ore and if it had alternative outputs when pulverized. Personally I would prefer to pulverize redstone for the chance of glowstone than just fortune redstone since redstone is very easy to get and doesn't require going to the nether, but then I try putting nether trips off as long as possible. It also depends on what other mods you're running with. You'd have to look at the possibilities of what you can get from the different ore types and factor them against the fortune enchant and see which you prefer.

Edit: Also, MFR has the block smasher that can act as a fortune pick (1-3). I know it's different from TiC's fortune, but not sure if the amounts are different. You also have to feed the smasher with mob essence.

The wiki says you can get up to 8 redstone if you have fortune III. Since pulverizing the ore always gives you 8 pieces, it's pretty obvious which one is the winner here. For everything else, fortune is better (including ores with TCon's auto-smelt+fortune, unless you have all the rich slag in the world).
If you're playing with Nether Ores, silk touch doesn't explode those ores either. Pigs still get angry at you, though.

And huh, does pulverizing redstone ore really have a chance to give you glowstone? I don't remember that.

That's odd, in .8wgt pulverizing it gave 10 redstone and a 10% chance for glowstone, but in ngt it's just 8 redstone.

Yea, which is why I found it odd when the pulverization recipe was different when I loaded up ngt since I don't understand why the pulv recipe would change between the two versions. Only other thing I can think of is another mod I added changed the pulv recipe when I was using it but that wouldn't make sense either cause it was just Mekanism and AS and I remember using that recipe without those two mods.

could it be TE`s compatibility for GT?
