There are two different types, Biomes o' Plenty Redwoods, and Natura Redwoods. The former only needs one sapling it seems, while the later needs the 7x7.

Also, MFFS has force manipulators, which could have done the job, if for a rather hilarious amount of power.

If you read the first post area , I am indeed using the 7x7 however they are growing full 13x13 redwood trees right where I need them with a single sapling :D
