Back in my day, we didn't have your organelles, we were bad self-copiers that couldn't make a good copy.

Back in my day, copiers were made of clay patterns that duplicated without any specialized support systems.

(Does that count as "rocks" yet?)
(Apparently, and this is from memory, clay can have imperfections / fracture lines, and they will replicate duplicate patterns as the clay lays down more sediment.)
