Shift-right-clicking your crucible isn't strictly necessary, but if there's a transmutation recipe for the aspects you've put into it, your aspects will be consumed to produce that item before they make it into any attached alembics. So, if you're trying to extract Metallum and Praecantatio out of something, you'll end up with a bunch of thaumium if you're right click without holding shift.
