I think the furthest I would ever go is using a Turtle and those confuse me enough as it is

How can "excavate 10" be that difficult to understand ;)

.. i havent read trough all the posts on this page, but i like BC for automation, huge quarrys that run over night. RP2 (framequarrys) for a lot and fast recourses. Steve's Carts i just use to build tunnels for minecarts :)

There is a third and even fourth part of this equation though. I'll get the third out of the way. Environmental impact. Can't really argue that a bc quarry or frame quarry remove large swathes of land. Tunnel bores and steve's carts, however, are under-earth, but that could be a plus or minus depending on what you prefer. I've seen a left alone auto-bore eat someone's underground base before. Imagine your surprise when you log in to find tons of machine blocks, rp2 machines, energy condensers, well, you get the idea, all in the overflow chest.

:D:D:D Too funny! (although not for the guy whose base it is!)

Drano, Liquid Plumber, and other such products make millions a year over the fact that many do not understand that the pipe under your sink actually is designed to be removable and most clogs can be undone in about a minute with a rag and a bucket, with very little mess. But I digress...

Programming is typically scary for the non-programmer because they can't 'see' it. You or I could look at a 5 x 5 railcraft tank, and see: (Note, not tested, just off top of head)

function turtleTankSquare()
turtle.placeDown(1)
turtle.forward ()
turtle.placeDown(1)
turtle.forward ()
turtle.placeDown(1)
turtle.turnRight()
turtle.forward ()
turtle.turnRight()
turtle.placeDown(1)
turtle.forward ()
turtle.placeDown(1)
turtle.forward ()
turtle.placeDown(1)
turtle.turnLeft()
turtle.forward()
turtle.turnLeft()
turtle.placeDown(1)
turtle.forward ()
turtle.placeDown(1)
turtle.forward ()
turtle.placeDown(1)
end

for i = 1, 5 do
turtle.placeDown(1)
turtle.forward()
turtle.up()
turtle.turnRight(2)
end

turtle.turnRight()
turtle.forward()
turtle.down(4)

for i = 1, 4 do
turtle.placeDown(1)
turtle.forward()
turtle.up()
turtle.turnRight(2)
end

turtle.back()
turtle.turnRight()
turtle.forward()
turtle.down(4)
turtleTankSquare()
turtle.turnRight(2)
turtle.up(4)
turtleTankSquare()
turtle.up(2)
turtle.dance()

The average person, they see a 5x5 bottom square and top square with walls. Gotta remember, once you learn programming turtles, you start to reach a point where you can 'think' in turtle. That's why it's best to call programming languages just that, languages. Makes for a rough communication barrier, and we sometimes think something is easier than it really is. It's like telling someone who has only used redpower2 logic gates to make a vanilla redstone logic gate of the same type. They know what it is supposed to do, just not how to make it do it.

yes, you're right, i know about ~10 different programming languages ;)
once you 'think' in LUA, it will be easy to program a turtle...

Me and languages don't go well together. I was horrible at French and even worse at Spanish: I learn more via doing and observing than I do by hearing and reading, so languages are the ultimate middle-finger considering you cannot "do" or "observe" words. It's not that I lack the attention span, rather I lack the mind capable of holding such information if it's not immediately interesting or necessary to learn. As an example, I didn't have to learn languages at school but the things which mattered such as Science, Maths and English went pretty well.

Interesting topic and I thought about this recently, because I have two 7x7 RP2 tunnel bores and it just feels wrong to have such a high source for ressources without any ongoing costs and relatively cheap building costs.
I think both the BC quarry (early game) and SC2 tunnel bores (late game, Galgadorian 3 stacks of diamond, lol) are a good way to go, but RP2 are too overpowered.

If you just want ressources as cheap as possible, RP2 is the way to go, if you want to play a little balanced a combination of BC and SC2 is better.

But it's possible my opinion doesn't mean much, because I also don't like the whole "pump lava from nether with ender chests in the overworld and use it with dozens of magma engines/geo generators so you don't have to care about BC/IC2 energy from early game on" ideology.

Why did someone bring up the thread? It made me think Red Power 2 has been updated to 1.6.2 :mad:

If that were to happen it would be all over the forums, not in a topic about mining...
Though I agree it probably would've been better if he just made a new topic. I do like the design/idea though and I'll probably use it, thanks Tnarg ;)
