I've been playing around with golems a little bit, but they haven't been working out for me as expected...I think I'm just using them incorrectly, so I'd appreciate some advice on how I should set them up.

At the moment I've just got two basic tasks in mind - one is maintaining a small Netherwart farm, the other is keeping my tree farm supplied with Humus.

For my Netherwart farm, I have used a Smart Straw golem and he's doing his job correctly. He harvests, he replants...he's awesome! However, I can't figure out how I'm supposed to collect the items he drops...apparently I need to use Wooden Golems but I can't see that option in my Thaumonomicon despite having finished all of the research. Are they a special type of golem you need to unlock with knowledge fragments/special notes, or are they just in some obscure place and I'm not seeing them? I've thoroughly looked through the "golem" area and all I have are Stone/Advanced, Clay/Advanced, Straw and Tallow, along with the intelligence cores.

For the tree farm, I think I'm just setting it up wrong. I have a barrel full of Humus, and I've assigned the stone golem to that by right-clicking on the barrel to place him. He seems to recognise the barrel as an inventory, but when I tell him to move Humus he doesn't do anything. I've also put a white marker block next to my arboretum, set him as white, given him a piece of Humus and set him to "Any amount"...but he still doesn't do anything. It could be because the arboretum is too far away I suppose, but it's only 5-6 blocks. He should be able to handle that right? I know they can use barrels, but how about an arboretum?

And finally, do these guys drain aura/produce flux? I still have NO method of dealing with that in my base area and while I appreciate the thunder, I probably don't want to mess up my home-base node.

To collect the items your straw drops use a wood golem and a chest. he will pick up all that drops from the farming. Check under the topic golemancy as I believe wood is the first one unlocked do it does not have its own item in the thuamonomcon.

Stone moves from place to marked inventory. So you need a marker for where you want the humus to go. You can do this backwards to using a clay golem are where you want your humus and use a marker on the chest where he can get it from.

The wood Golem is actually in the Golemancy Research.
You have to click Golemancy (the first one) to get the wood golem.
The only Aura they take is that which is used to produce them.

Ohhhh, that makes sense. I never notice the recipes on those pages.

Thanks!

I'll also look into using a Clay golem to do the tree-farm process in reverse, because as far as I can tell I've set up the stone golem right and he's just stupid.

I suspect the problem is the side of the barrel you've set the golem on. Items in barrels can only come out from the bottom, so that's the side you need to place the golem on. Which means you'll probably need to have the barrel floating one block above the ground so that the golem can access the bottom side. If you have done this, then make sure there's nothing between the barrel and the arboretum that might be preventing the golem from pathing to it (I know they don't react very well to microblocks for example).

Also note that in order for the humus to go into the correct slot of the arboretum you need to place the marker block under the arboretum. If you place it above, the golem will place the humus into the middle slot where the saplings go, and if you place it on the sides he will place the humus into the right slot where the sand is.

Phantom has the last part of your question. You just need to set up the marker block on the side that items are able to be pumped into with a pipe. The golem is basically a pipe that moves. It needs to know what side of the block the items need to be placed, and with some machines being smart and need items in a certain side, it is necessary to put the marker block in the right position.

This isn't true for barrels, at least I don't need to leave a space below them for golems to remove items from them. The arboretum did have this problem though. I ended up using a Clay Golem to simplify things (I didn't have space for a marker under the arboretum anyway), so I had to activate him on the BOTTOM of the arboretum to get him to put Humus in the correct slot. Once I did that, he didn't have any issues getting Humus from the barrel (which sits at ground level on top of a buried white marker) and throwing it in there. It's been working fine ever since.

The only remaining obstacle to full automation is that the Humus isn't replenished, but I don't have unlimited supplies of dirt or fertilizer either so I'll just restock the barrel when I need to. It lasts for ages anyway.
