On another note, how do you craft Salis Mundus? In the wiki article to says 1 essence + 1 shard of any color, or two mana beans + 1 shard .. but neither recipe is working. Am I doing something wrong? Also, not seeing it in the thaumanomicon either

It's been modified. It is in the Thaumonomicon, but under a different name (Magical Constructs I think?). It now takes 2 essence + 1 shard, or 4 mana beans + 1 shard.

Is there a way to farm essences without breaking the nodes?
Wisps also drop essence, and can be found in magical forests and everywhere in the nether. Quite hard to hit, but if you have MFR, just make a wisp spawner and you will be set for essences. I also want to emphasize scanning aura nodes again. This is really useful for primal aspects like ordo, and aura nodes are basically unlimited. I did not need to build an deconstruction table yet despite having researched quite a lot already.
One last thing: I made a tool that helps with research. You might want to have a look here. Basically, it finds the shortest connections between two aspects using the aspects you have available.
It's the shortest, but it doesn't generally give very cheap solutions..
There are generally alternate solutions which uses closer to primary aspects that it doesn't show.
I went hunting for totems, and found and scanned a bunch of nodes in the process. Scan the node first, recharge your wand, then break any junk nodes you find. I ended up with over 150 of the primal aspects after i had done this, and lots of essence.

Each node you scan gives you some aspects. I made a mystcraft age using Single Biome, Flat, Extreme Hills, (Some other stuff that just made it easier - bright lighting, normal sun, moon, stars, weather ... And crossed my fingers. Got a flat age, always rains there ... sniff. the ground ---- flat --- was at y-180. So, I got a LOT of thaumcraft circles with the chests (above chest is a node - sinister), lots of thaumcraft hills that usually have a node inside. Just picked a direction and went off a scanning getting aspects. Came back after a bit and did some research, rinse and repeated. BUT I had control over the server, so I didn't have to beg for an age to be made so I could do that.
