Or if you're using Tinker's Construct rush a completed smelter with a casting basin, a bucket, and 18 iron ore, make a tool station after getting the 4 iron blocks, build a hammer, and then do what bigglesworth said. The time it takes to get a full smelter and the iron is vastly offset by the speed of a hammer over a pick.

True, but by the time youd have that iron, youd have a dozen diamonds as getting that iron the quickest way is by this method as well. Unless you spawn by a cave, but then you rob yourself of diamonds in the process. So dig down first -> Gather Iron/Coal/Gold/Lapis/Redstone/Diamonds/Obsidian etc, go back up with your stacks of iron, -> TC -> Enchant -> Go back down/Go caving like a boss in 60 min or less. Its boring as hell but if youre after a very efficient start its the fastest way to get the most stuff.

Well yea, you want to get iron as you're looking for diamonds. MY main point was get a hammer so you can clear much more land while looking for the diamonds, not to forgo looking for everything else to get iron. Personally I recommend using silk touch on the tools though since your bags will fill quickly enough with stone and ore - not to mention you can silk touch the lapis and pulverize it to get more to put towards fortune.

Edit: Also, it doesn't have to be iron, it can be copper or tin as well, I just prefer to use iron.

It mines out a 3x3 area, has more durability, and can achieve higher speeds with just stone and flint because of stonebound. For stonebound only the flint would count, but you can get a hammer made of stone with flint plates and it will reach 9 mining speed before it breaks (you'll mostly use it around 7-8 speed). This makes it clear tunnels much faster by clearing out 9 blocks at a time at speeds faster than most pickaxes while having more uses between repairs.
