So, my computer is kinda skimpy on the ram. I'd like to increase that or get a new machine, but I have kids and never enough $. Anyway, are there any mods that would be ok with less than 4 g? I prefer things to be challenging and I like to explore. Please help my sanity and offer up some things to try. I played cloud 9 a bunch, but it seems to not like my computer a whole lot. Either that or it's emotionally unstable.

Thanks
Kara

If you're stuck with 4gb RAM, you're likely going to be better served playing with 1.7 packs, as opposed to the newer versions. The engine was tuned differently after 1.7 to be a bit easier on the couch, but they pushed some of the load of to RAM.

Generally, Skyblock style maps are easier on your computer, as they only need to load and deal with what you place, versus generating the entire Overworld, caves, figuring out lighting, and so forth.

If you find you can handle that without too much issue, I highly recommend Regrowth, if you haven't played it (or even if you have - it's that good). Otherwise, try taking the Vanilla+ pack and adding a mod it maybe two at a time. This could help you focus on the mods you want without having to carry all the ones you aren't actively working with. Once you get a feel for the load you can carry, you'll have an easier time picking packs to play.

Tartarus.. I mean at work. Same thing really.
Theres piles of hints and tips in the forum on how to improve performance- Minecraft lags every computer, so we all suffer together.

From what I can remember;
  • Run the correct version of Java for whatever version of MC you're using
  • Try some JVM arguments (google these) into the launcher
  • Screw around with the graphics settings (fast graphics, simple lighting, shorter render distance ect)
  • Try performance boosting mods like Fastcraft, BetterFPS, Optifine ect (Optifine has mixed results)
  • Cull background programmes (internet browser, steam ect) that you don't need running while playing.
  • Make sure your PC is cooling itself properly (not clogged up with dust)- some computers 'throttle back' on processing power if the system gets too hot. (I use 'CoreTemp' to keep an eye on CPU temperature)
  • Choose a smaller/lighter pack, or play an older version (older versions run better, and some of the classic packs are very awesome)
  • Play on a server (the server handles some of the calculations so you don't have to)
I've tried all of these in some combination over the years; a lot of them had noticeable results except Java version and the cooling (though it did stop the thermal cut out from tripping). However there is a LOT of variables so what worked on my end might have less effect on yours (or vice versa).

--Edit--
Just remembered this guide on how to run Infinity Evolved on 1GB ram allocation

Just a couple of points to add to the points @Celestialphoenix makes:

1). Mojang has recommendations on which version of Java to use with specific versions of Vanilla Minecraft. This is because that was the version of Java used to create the version in question. An older version of Java may not contain commands used in the MC version, and in some cases commands are changed in the newer Java. 1.0.9 supposedly breaks MC, for example.

2). Make sure any JVM switches you try are supported by the Java version, for the reasons noted above. The two major JVM args used with Java 1.0.7 were changed in 1.0.8 as well as the default values having been increased to the same value that was used by the 1.0.7 JVM args... Modded MC now needs more ram than that so you will need to make adjustments, just make sure you use the correct ones.

3). Don't rely on embedded graphics... They may not be up to snuff unless it's in a brand new system (less than 2 years old) and also steals system ram to use for video ram. For example, a Laptop with 4GB ram installed probably only has 3.5GB for OS and Applications available because Video Ram is needed. Also, don't use too old a GPU card. You don't need a 1080Ti or a Vega but a 4 year old card doesn't perform the best. My GT610 with 1GB gives me less than 60FPS average. I have lots of room for improvement when I can afford another upgrade :D
