Just to pipe in another option, there is.. somewhere.. a mod in development called "YATS". ("Yet Another Tube System", hah!). It is specifically being designed to replace RedPower2's Pneumatic Tubes. Do not know if it is in finished or in stable stages yet, however.

Me personally, I am finding that Logistics Pipes can do almost ANYTHING that I want them to.. as long as you set them up correctly.

Personally even though this doesn't really count as a pipe, I really like applied energistics ME buses to transport items around.

I don't understand the problem. Two item tesseracts, quarry on one end, your storage method of choice on the other.

If you're just starting out you can dump bulk into DSUs and put the good stuff into Diamond chests---and there really isn't that much good stuff coming out of a basic quarry that you need a lot of storage. Use that first influx of resources to setup some basic automated processing with TE, IC2, or Factorization, add whatever amount of complexity you want as resources allow.

I used to love pneumatic tubes but with AE available I wouldn't use them even if RP2 was updated to 1.5x. The beauty of AE is that you no longer need to do any sorting. The access terminal/export bus/interface/etc. sort on demand. I don't have to know/care where something is, what storage device it is in, I can pull it out anywhere I've got the AE network.

Thanks for all the replies and have tried all of them, but am still having an issue with the items being sorted onto barrels.

When using the EU pipes, the suggestion of using a chest did, indeed work, but, despite using the sorting pipes, the items were still being put in barrels at random (e.g. 2 sand in one barrel, another 2 in another barrel, and so on). Not too sure whey this is, as the wiki says the sorting pipes will try to place items in inventories that have the same items already.

next I tried the insertions pipes, but am still having the same issue. I followed the instructions given and place an insertion pipe on top of each barrel but the same effect as previously mentioned is occurring. Random placement on items coming from the quarry, 2 sand in one barrel and 2 sand in another, instead of my intended outcome of all sand going into one barrel, all cobblestone into another etc.

Any ideas?

Do you have the barrels attached in series or parallel? They have to be in series in order to work, both the Insertion pipes and Transfer pipes. Both of them will put stuff in something if there is space for it, so you have to make sure it travels past the barrels in a certain order so it fills up the ones you want it to fill first.

They don't work like RP tubes. RP tubes send items to a specific place in the network, tubes and transfer pipes don't. All insertion pipes and transfer pipes do is this: when an item comes into a piece of pipe, can that item go into an adjacent inventory or not? if it can it'll put it in there. What that means is that any inventory with space is a valid destination, so you have to make sure that stuff travels past the inventories you want it to go in first (ie, you cobble/sand/dirt chests/barrels).

You have to "prime" the barrels by placing the items you want in each barrel. An easy way to do this is to place 1 of each item in the barrels available and if you don't have 1 of an item you want to store then add a chest to your pipe system to collect the overflow. The barrels that you don't have items for, just place cobble or something that your quarry won't pick up like sticks.

This way the non-primed barrels don't collect random items. He primed barrels collect what you want I them. The rest goes into an overflow chest and when you get an item you want in the Barrel, replace the stick with that item
