All modpacks freeze when launching

Details of the issue MacOS High Sierra 10.13.6
Issue happens regardless of whether I use Legacy launcher mac or legacy launcher Linux
The launcher works fine, but when I click Launch for any modpack, it freezes right after the FTB letters come together, there's a notice that says "FML is setting up your minecraft environment Minecraft validated, launching..." I'm unable to click anywhere on the application and I have to force close it.
