Well, the point is I could still setup a rudimentary AE system before I get enough of those GD Certus Quartz for those GD disks. T-T)
But you would burn through quartz making storage buses, and those would be next to useless after you got a proper system set up. A rudimentary AE setup would be more like ME chests with small disks, both of which would still be useful when you got a full network going.

I started with 6x 1K storage disks, you don't need to start with anything bigger. Those (plus a few DSUs for bulk) served me for an entire 64x64 quarry. I've since added a couple more 1K and 4 of the 4k storage disks.

FYI, if you want to store a small number of many different items, use smaller storage disks. Conversely, if you want to store a large number of just a few different items, use the larger storage disks. Someone else did the math, but that's the most efficient way to use the ME storage disks.

Hmm..so smaller drives are better for regular items not in vast quantities but if for massive amount of items, how would a DSU stand up against a 64k?

I should point out, that the best consistent method I've seen for quartz, it to silk touch the ores, and run through a railcraft rock crusher. It gives you a guaranteed 5 dust. The dust can be placed in an IC2 compressor and turned back into a crystal. All the other methods I've seen only give 4 crystals/dusts. Fortune III *might* be better, but not sure.[DOUBLEPOST=1376412423][/DOUBLEPOST]

DSU hand's down. The 64k uses so much quartz to make, I've never needed one. I've found it far more efficient to make a couple drive units and fill with 1k disks. My current system has 2 drive bays. the first has a couple pre-formated 4k disks for my bulk items, and the rest have 1k storage disks.

Edit: I'm thinking about making a couple DSUs and storage buses for the bulk items and do away with the pre-formated 4k disks entirely. The only items I really need to worry about are the ones that come in from my automated farms. The rest is handled on demand, so it is unlikely to ever overflow.

A DSU wins for a massive amount of a single item, it can hold something like 2 billion. Great for quarry trash (cobble/dirt/gravel), wood if you have a high output tree farm, etc. 64k's really aren't worth the cost most of the time, you'll typically run out of types before you run out of bytes, anything you need to store in high enough quantities to utilize a 64k are better stored in DSUs or upgraded barrels.

Thanks for the replies, guess I'll be using a combination of small drives and DSUs for my AE system. :D

The only time you need one now is to make a singularity for linking distant AE networks together.
True. But even there, I prefer to do wireless AE with logistic pipes. Much cheaper to build and run, the only downside is a slight delay on transfers
