Does anyone have a suggestion of the best way to learn how to use the mods and get familiar with them. I'm new at the mod packs and don't know much about them. Is there a suggested mod pack to play as a beginner?

I forgot to mention, direwolf20 is some new guy that everyone is talking about though. Though everyone knows that direwolf20 is oldie but goldie better than a new guy.

Watch a lot of videos, then experiment with mods in each modpack.
As a good starting modpack, FTB Monster is good, but I personally would wait for the 1.7.2 modpacks to arrive, since a lot of mods and/or features have been dramatically altered.

Like other members have suggested, Direwolf20 is a great YouTuber and I find all his tutorials so easy to understand! He also has a series on his own modpack available on the FTB Launcher.

Now, I myself would recommend Botania, not only is it easy to learn and has a complete in-game book guide (the Lexica Botania), but me and @Strikingwolf document it carefully on the Official FTB wiki and shall answer any queries you have on the mod.

And of course I can recommend other well-documented mods, (obviously Botania eats them all for breakfast but oh well) such as Witchery (documented by @SatanicSanta) and Blood Magic (documented by @Padfoote).
