I always build both. The silk touch, as has been mentioned multiple times, is great for long mining trips due to inventory usage. It is really quite easy to drop items that yield better with fortune into a turtle that keeps placing as you break with the fortune pick in front of an obsidian wall. Best of both worlds.

There even used to be a block you could actually place a pickaxe in and it would automatically swing it at blocks in front of it. Not sure if it is still around, but that would have made for a really nice automated turtle fortune processor.

I agree with you. Two is better than one.

About that block, are you talking about the arcane bore?

No. It was a weird frame like thing with a horizontal post through the center that you could mount any tool to. It would simply start swinging whenever there was a block in front of it. I believe I remember it being called a "block breaker" causing some confusion with the RedPower block, but I never figured out what FTB mod it was actually from.

So, you haven't tried to build a GT grinder yet, I reckon?
*rolls eyes*

Okay, then what whythisname said + silktouched blocks are much easier to store o_O, it's also better for building with natural stone, or whatever, all I'm saying is that There IS a debate for ST vs Fortune.

The only real point for "there is no debate" is that all of this is dependent on the pack as you've pointed out.

agreed. on both points Poppycocks. if your GT (1.4, or whatever) silk touch is the way forward as the grinder (and/or rock crusher early game [as i haven't guilt either but do understand the dynamics :( ]) triple ore>ingot(dust) and produce other useful tiny plies. non GT, well, then i'm still fortune. as on average i'm tripling the majority of the crystals. as far as i can tell, there is ultimately no reason to silk touch for the very few things it helps with. there's still a tonne to find out and explore especially in 1.5.2 so i find yet a reason where silk touch can benefit.
