Hi,
why do you need administrator's rights to update the launcher? Or is it just because my FTB folder is located in \AppData\Roaming ?

Most likely because of where you installed it. Move it to a location like c:\FTB or something and that will stop.
Alot of directories are secured.

Edit: P.s. this really should have been in the tech support area.

I will try that on a next update, whenever that will be.

Well it kinda is a feedback, but you are right about this being in a wrong area...

You don't have to wait, you can just move the whole folder and just change the location the shortcut points to.

Already done that, but I don't know if it solved my problem... ;-) Even though it probably did...

Btw. can some mod move this thread to tech support, please? Thx.

Hmm nice. I couldn't update because of some path problems so I reinstalled in a new folder (not in AppData) hoping it would solve the issue...
Before - admin rights required only for update
Now - admin rights required even for starting the modpack, when I start it without them the launcher shuts down after about 2-3 seconds without obvious reasons...
Even tried to relog as admin and giving all security permissions -> doesn't work either.

Btw. why did I receive an error message telling me, that the whole FTBBETAA folder is mightier than admin and doesn't want to change any permissions?

Just found a solution:

Hi,

I had the same issue as a lot of people the you would launch the FTB exe and nothing would happen, in the task manager java would open and close again.

I ran the .jar version of FTB in CMD and found it couldn't find the locale folder.

The local folder should be located:

Win7/8/Vista
C:\Users\<Username>\Appdata\Roaming\ftblauncher

XP (I have not checked this as I dont run XP, have a hunt for it)
C:\Documents and Settings\<Username>\Local Settings\ftblauncher

Anyway for may solution I found just a .zip called locales.zip in this folder, I simply unzipped this to locales and then removed the "s" from the "locales" folder so it was now "locale"

After this all was well :)

Hope this works for all you people.

Also works for .exe version.
All that remains is to check, if I can update without admin rights...

Edit: I forgot to post a link: http://support.feed-the-beast.com/?qa=4320/when-i-click-ftb_launcher-nothing-happens

Tried to update from 1.1.6 to 1.1.7 -> it didn't work:
C:\Users\****\AppData\Roaming\ftblauncher\updatetemp\FTB_Launcher.exe (Access is denied): java.io.FileNotFoundException:
C:\Users\****\AppData\Roaming\ftblauncher\updatetemp\FTB_Launcher.exe (Access is denied)

I did not update to try any suggestions anybody posts here, but from previous experience starting the launcher as admin fixes this problem...

I would post this on the support site if you link forum accounts with accounts on support site...

The above problems should have been fixed with the 1.1.7 update.
galeas90, try running FTB out of a different folder (just an empty one on your desktop should work)

Hmm, nice. I remember updating vanilla minecraft without admin rights and you say to me I can't do the same with FTB?
