I just started using Academy today (1.2) using the new FTB launcher on a Mac.
I do not initially spawn with a quest book - which I only know I am supposed to after looking into this on other forums - and when I get to the very early quest of upgrading a wood chest to iron I am unable to complete the task and the quest locks. I have seen other people have this same issue in past versions of the game. I just downloaded all of this today, including java, so everything is up to date.
