That's a nice survey you have there.

I've found a interesting answer in it...
Least favorite mod included in your preffered pack?

Gregtech. I like it's recipe changes, but I don't know what any of the machines do.

...

What?

Usually, pepole say the opposite...

That was me, actually.

I feel honored.

Seriously, I don't really care to look at a wiki page to look at what the 'upgraded' machines do. The recipes make the game harder, and I've been doing boring things and it's been hurting the life span of my world. The harder recipes artificially increase the lifespan of my world by making things take a bit longer and also require a bit more thought. Or, rather, not more thought but just a different path has to be taken to get certain things.

Now that I got my dartcraft stuff in order, it's easy. My regeneration and electric armor beats their poison every time.

I'll have to take another look at dartcraft then. The last time I battled witches, it was on a server where an admin was spawning mobs for us. We had fully upgraded power armor and were pretty much invincible until he started spawning witches. We died in less than 10 seconds.

Interestingly, the free text entry for least favorite mod contains a lot entries containing X, and only a few are EXBL....

My secrets are:

1. Dartcraft regeneration rods (mark2) on a force belt.
2. Dartcraft holding rods (cheap)
3. No one has seen Devil Hunter (Witch Hunter MarkII). It's a TiC tool. In combination with my new dartcraft armor which adds to my damage (and drops)...
4. Another good tool against them is the dimensional blade from DimDoors. Their targetting gets all mixed up.
5. You are immune to splash attacks while jumping with a rapier OR longsword. But this is really tough to exploit if your connection gets laggy or the server tickrate dips down.

The only problem I really have with the survey is the questions about what modpack you play.

I do play Ultimate, but I remove the mods I won't touch ever. (GT/IC2/RC/MPS....)

Answering the question makes it look like I actually play with the mods in it.

I did answer Other and state this fact, but it kind of skewers the results a bit by making it look like people like me who won't play with GT actually do.

Yeah... that's an issue I don't think I can fix.

Yeah... that's an issue I don't think I can fix.

This is my main concern with the survey as well. It seems from the forum that 1.5 was a breaking point for a lot of people who just weren't content to wait for an FTB mod pack of their updated mods. Numerous DIY threads started showing up and lots of experimenting with creating custom packs became quite common. There are also quite a few popular mod packs that are prevalent on the forums now & that data is not at all being captured. It would be interesting to see it as part of your data because this is a relevant topic.

FTB has only recently offered any 1.5.x versions of the packs, and these are labelled as Beta packs with different ID's and a vague allusion that they may become recommended packs. So in essence, a lot of your data is based on outdated packs and people trying to participate without proper options. It may be a minority data pool, but its still valid. I personally made my own modpack for 1.5 and currently have the pleasure to be using the Resonant Rise pack and short of RR being added to the launcher, I'm not seeing myself using an FTB pack in the immediate future. ;)

I think this has been a bit of a tactical oversight from the FTB authors. They are adding a lot of "early beta" mods like Xycraft and Xeno's (just some example) and the more mods you add, the more likely the chance that one will be discontinued.

I personally think that only open-source mods should be added for two reasons. First of all; safety. You want to know what a mod does exactly without having to decompile it. Secondly; you want people to take over development of mods when the original author cannot does not want to spend time on it. A good example is RP2; you don't want a single mod to hold back everyone else. Atleast every mod that does worldgen should be open-source. It would also be ideal if the worldgen part would be a separate mod; this way you can upgrade the most important parts first.

I mean, I basically lost all interest in playing on our server now that 1.6 is underway and we're not getting any updates or information on when what will be available.

Fun fact: TE, MFR, TC3, RC and much, much more mods would be taken away if we only added open source mods.
Just because a mod is open source doesn't mean it's good or bad. It kinda depends on how fast does the modder updates it.

Good point. I think as long as the mod developer shows commitment, it's okay to include it. However, I do think they are adding a good bit of early-stage development mods... but then again, it is a beta pack.

You just need to remind yourself that you're playing your game. Minecraft has no winners or losers. It has builders. And everyone's build is strange and new to outsiders.

I appreciate the empathy, but I think one of my other problems, is that I actually try and build things as small as possible, not as large. My background is Linux scripting, before playing Minecraft; and what I learned there was to design something as small and simply as possible, if I want to avoid it having problems. I did a permaculture design course in 2011, and was taught the same thing there as well. I think that's my major conflict where the whole balance issue is as well.

Mod designers and other people want everything as big and complex as possible, so they always have more stuff to do. I, on the other hand, am more likely to try and miniaturise something as much as possible, (a frame-based mining machine, hydrogen power array from Mekanism, or whatever else) and then move on and find something else that I can do that with. I tend to create buildings which are very small, and machines that are as well. So while I get things done, it's just never as epic as what other people produce, in terms of appearance at least. I'm a lot more about efficiency.
