so has anyone else tried out Tinker's Construct's Brownstone Roads? It seems like it doubles your speed (Sprinting speed while walking, fun fast Sprint while Sprinting). It's nice to have a reason to have roads besides aesthetics. For those wondering, they're made by pouring Molten Tin over Gravel that's in a Casting Basin at the Smeltery, to make Rough Brownstone (Tooltip: "You run a bit faster on it"). Then you use a Chisel on the Rough Brownstone to make Brownstone Roads (Tool Tip: "You Run pretty fast on it")

Tinker's is consistently awesome.

not sure I'll use anything but a Smeltery for Bronze/Copper/Tin/Aluminum/Vanilla Ores for the near future.......

I am currently pitying the people who haven't done a manual mod pack for 1.5 and are waiting for *official* 1.6 FTB/etc mod packs. They're missing out on some HELLA good content. Haven't checked out Tinker's two new things, Chisels and Daggers yet, mainly because MDiyo hasn't updated the book yet, but partially because of all the other new content other mods have. I haven't even touched 1.5 TE yet, or the new MFR features.......doesn't mean I'm not excited to, though.

Ohhhh yeah, 1.5 is a good time for the modding scene. So many shiny things and so few using it! The perks of helping test a 1.5 beta modpack...

I pity you for saying that. Some of us are having a blasts in our 1.4.7 world and can't either be bothered, or have the time/skills to make a 1.5 pack. For myself, I want a mod pack after spending way too much time in other games in the past tracking and configuring mods, and not actually playing the game.

So I won't see the new stuff for a while longer? So what, it just means when 1.6 pack is available, there will be a lot of new stuff more me. Everything from 1.5 AND 1.6. Personally I'm not too excited about Tinkers Construct. It's turning simple tool making into a mini-game.

I skipped all of minecraft 1.3.2 as I was playing Tekkit, then switched to FTB. I'll be skipping 1.5 for 1.6.

Just a tool making minigame.
I agree with you, and I'm stuck in 1.4.7 because I'm too lazy to look up how to use config packs, and I havn't played Tinkers construct yet, but I LOOOVEE MINIGAMES! :D

Anyway, that being said, I'm the kind of guy who plays the buggy vanilla snapshots, so even though I won't have redpower, I think I'll try one of the 1.5 packs.

I'd tell you that you can put together a modpack quickly and without too much effort, but this hasn't actually been my experience. I spent around 4 hours putting together my 1.5.1 instance with 82 mods. A good chunk of that was trying to resolve a GL error which caused some items not to render, but regardless, it took a long time.

It was totally worth it, though. 1.5 is awesome. So many new things to try out! I didn't even realize Tinker's Construct has roads. I like the appearance of MFR roads, but don't like sliding all over the place, so I disabled that. I'll check 'em out, asap.

The only thing I don't like about Tinker's is that it focuses so much on tools that I'd rather not use. I won't go back from using a mining drill that never needs to be replaced and works as a combo pick/shovel. You know how you felt when you first started and got your first iron pick, then looked at that leftover wooden pick in your chest like it was made of poison and should die? That's how I feel about all shovels and picks now. Similar situation with shears, axes, hoes, etc - with just a couple of mods I don't have to mess with that crap. I don't see a reason to install a mod that focuses so heavily on making cave-man tools, no matter how cool it handles it.

Then you'll like the... I think it's called a mattock?... from Tinker's Construct. It works as a shovel/axe. Not quite as handy as a pickaxe/shovel, maybe, but it's still pretty useful.

Funny thing is, i'm the opposite - I prefer to have the right tool for the job. I do use multitools, but that will change as soon as we get this awesome mod.

Yeah, that's pretty cool! If it never needed to be replaced I'd use it. That's one of the reasons I love Thaumcraft. I'd rather spend weeks trying to get half a dozen tools from Thaumcraft enchanted with repair/charging than to keep remaking damaged tools. Yeah, I know there's little sense in that and I understand if others prefer the opposite. I don't think Tinker's is a bad mod, or even anything less than awesome, but it's tailored to people who aren't me.

So I guess I could keep this to myself. Maybe I posted because someone else out there probably feels the same way and they get to smile and say to themselves, "Thanks buddy, now I don't have to post that."

Poison wooden pickaxes.

And that's why I burn them, they become useful! :D

If we're talking about tools, then I just rock my overclocked powertool. No worries, very efficient, and never breaks.

Talking roads though, I love the road lights from...MFR, is it? I can't remember.

Isnt it possible to enchant Tinker tools? If so, I will definitly go for these together with some repair enchantments :) If not I will stay with my good old mining drill aswell.

I agree, I also love multi tools that just do everything. That said, for things like Silk Touch and Fortune regular tools are still good. Especially the fact many modders don't like enchants on their tools means they'll probably get removed/fixed at some point.
I don't know if Tinker's offers anything along the lines of Silk Touch or Fortune, but if it does I will definitely look into it (or of course if they can be enchanted that's also great). There are also enhancements that repair a tool (some sort of moss I think) and turn a tool into a power tool, so I'm pretty sure Tinker's also has some options to make infinitely usable tools.

You know, if you also have IC2 installed, you can make tinker's tools run off EU. Meaning you get all the benefits of tinkers forever.

EDIT: You can't enchant tinkers tools normally, but you give them modifications that do the same thing. I think adding redstone increases mining speed, lapis gives a fortune-like effect and you can add moss for repair (though that is so slow, you're better off just making it run off EU if you want it to last). For weapons, you can add nether quartz for increased damage, and a necrotic bone (a drop from wither skellies) for a life-steal effect.

Well thats a feature which is convincing me :) I like the fact that many of the new mods are working on compatibility and crossmod options.

I do too! Lately I've been making roads out of redrock cobble slabs. They don't make you faster, but they look cool next to grass and they don't block light properly, so a j-o-l under every 6th slab lights up the road beautifully, and without any visible lights. Also, as soon as I saw the MFR road lights I thought "runway!" Gotta make one of those.

I did not know that, thanks for mentioning it. Worth considering it further, I guess!

Yeah, I moved from using IC2 tools to using the Tinkers Construct tools. Where else am I gonna get a lightning fast pick enchanted with Fortune 3 that lasts forever with it's rechargeable battery?

It does also add modifiers for both fortune/looting and silk touch equivalients. As far as I can tell, you can't enchant them directly, but adding certain modifiers seems to add enchants to them (such as my lapis-decked rapier with looting III). To be honest, I'm actually enjoying that method of applying modifiers significantly over the "click-and-pray" enchanting, or book spamming. Also, adding moss to the tools makes them auto-repair. For the lower versions, it's still possible to break them, but with the higher ones, I've found that they usually have enough time to repair themselves of any work that you do with them.

I suppose that would be my main criticism with it, really. Regardless of the new routes and extra things that it adds, there is still fundamentally, an all-powerful end goal.
