I love railcraft. I have never done anything good with it, but i love what it stands for, and the interesting things that it adds to minecraft. But the problem is that I can't seem to use it. For example, just recently my friends and I were tackling a transportation problem on the server, IE getting around to each others place which are 1000s of blocks away from each other. Originally we were gonna build a rail craft hub thing through the nether. But it just turned out to be impossible/not as effective as mystcraft linking books for two/three reasons. One the tunnels through the nether were brutal, two didn't have the time, and three rail craft, for a fun mod, is kinda expensive and complicated to craft per rail. So I guess what i'm saying here is have any of you used rail craft for something fun and exciting? If you have I would love to see it! Thx

I used it once to transport lava from the nether to the overworld though a normal nether portal. It is a simple setup and most of it is hard to get a picture from as I tried to hide most of it

"Recently" made a minecart tramway transport system with 10 stations spread out over my base. Complete with automatic stations(spawning/despawning/sharing carts), destination choosing logic, opening/closing drawbridge gates as cart passes by, single track network so direction detection to control tracks(power them ON one direction, OFF other direction for example), and more.

Described the process of making it in my usual thread over several pages, but it starts here:

Do I enjoy the concept of advancing the vanilla rail mechanics? Absolutely. Do I like the mod Railcraft? Not so much. I don't want to have to deal with all the bloat and other things that come with the mod just to have wye rails and reinforced rails.

I have to say Railcraft is one of my favourite mods, but not because of the rails. The stone variants it adds (Quarried/Abyssal/Infernal/Sandy/etc) are absolutely beautiful, and I don't think I've ever made a base without them. I also love how they have flavour behind them, instead of just being something like smooth stone + dye.

I don't have pictures of my current setup, but it's a 12 cart long train that includes a tank, an admin chunkloader (computer not powerful enough for enemies, and so no ender pearl access.) and ten chest carts. I send it out to pick up from my quarry.

My previous worlds have included such features as a private minecart line that also shared track with an MFSU cart to transfer power to my wizard tower, because there was no transformation between EU and MJ at the time. Not that I had enderpearls anyway.

In 1.5.2 I had a minecart that rose from the depths of the ocean floor then sped along a a track to a processing facility. Then a second track that went way up into the air and carried processed materials to my home base.

Another 1.5.2 world had a massively long Railcraft line, for no good reason other than me being a compulsive looter, and I couldn't carry everything home, so I built a long rail line out to the place where I'd found all the storage minecarts and drove a locomotive out there to collect them. It would also have had a bee area stop off if I hadn't gotten bored of the world.

My previous 1.6.4 Monster base had a massive rail line running out to my quarry, a second line for my personal use. Then a line running a huge distance to the south where I was building an oil rig. Not that I needed it, but because I could. I even planned to lay rails all over the Outback biome I was near so I could procure oil from there. Then the world corrupted just before I started work on my massive train station.

I also had a 1.6.4 Direwolf pack that had rails running to my Ars Magicka area, and my mining area. Originally it was supposed to run several thousand blocks in every direction, but I got sidetracked. (Pun Intended.)

I was not aware of that, but it still requires Ender Pearls to make them, and I have yet to find any Ender Lillies. Fortunately, in a day or two, I'll have the PSU for my new computer and I'll be able to play with enemies. :D

You can minetweak out the requirements for creosote oil or simply get more ties from the same amount of creosote, which I believe is the bigger obstacle to getting any decent number of rails.

I think what he means is being forced to having all the cosmetic blocks, tanks and machines as well as the rail upgrades.

Personally think it is a very compact and high quality mod(all of the content), but I see his point if all he want to do is lay tracks.

Honestly it's even still a modular mod. As far as I remember, you only need the core module, which has all the tracks. But it takes effort to go in and turn off the other bits of it, and not everyone is willing to go to that much effort.

As the other individual mentioned, it's not the recipes, it's the fact that it lards down the mod with a ton of stuff I neither want nor need. (random rant on my reasons for not liking everything else in the mod removed because they are largely irrelevant to the discussion at hand and potentially inflammatory to people with diametrically opposed views)

Also, I'd compare 'you can fix it with minetweaker' with an Oberoni Fallacy. If it requires you to fix it, then by definition it is broken. Furthermore, Minetweaker has a LOT of problems with it, not in the least the fact that you sneeze on it and everything associated with the instance will crash and burn and world-corrupt. Once you start using minetweaker, you are forever locked into continuing to use it. The code is easy enough to write, I just don't like its lack of stability, and I highly discourage its use.

Love/hate. Its a great concept although a definite no brainer for minecraft to have autonomous minecarts. But the few times Ive used RC for the actual rails was only for vanity projects that could be done much more efficiently using other means... Which is why I miss Traincraft because it did all the same things as railcraft but with fancier looking "carts".

Efficiency is one of those words that always makes me cringe slightly when applied to gaming. I game to have fun, not be efficient. I am efficient at work. I drive in an efficient manner. I mow in a certain pattern because it's the most efficient way to cut the grass.

I game to get away from all that. I play to be stupidly unrealistic and over the top. It's most efficient to play D&D with a sword and board fighter. I'm busy dual wielding candlesticks.

Too many LPer's say: We're going totally over the top with this project that needs huge amounts of power/items/fluids. Yet instead of doing something cool with it, they just thump down a Tesseract and move on. Efficiency lacks style and flair. I do understand that in some cases, such as on a server, you don't want to be running immense trains around. But Direwolf for example, has no excuse, since he's running on a dedicated server. He even said he was going to use Railcraft more this season, and then how does he harvest an oil well? Ender Tank.

I am often saddened at the creativity lost by the drive for 'efficiency'. Oh well, at least Etho is blowing himself up with HS Rail.

Unfortunately, I am more of a 'casual gamer'. I only have a few hours a week between the job and the family and other assorted obligations. I don't have time to do something over the top. I don't want to have to take a month of my playing time to build something. So efficiently is the watchword.

Sorry to be off-topic (somewhat) but this post summarizes really well my opposition to "efficiency" in games like Minecraft. I take my hat off to you sir. :p
