Getting fed up with always using tech mods for my tree farm, and wanting to avoid overloading my base with golems (nothing personal against them as I love them, but i'm not sure my server would like too many of you.)
Yes I'd probibly use golems for everything given the chance. Anyhow - i've digressed a little. This is my attempt at a primarily Botania-based Tree Farm. This is on a DW20 1.7 server.

The only thing not shown here, is a kinetic attractor, hidden two blocks under the Rammuncarpus. This is simply to pull the saplings to it so it can plant them. In case the golem's core isn't that visible, it's a Lumberjack core golem. Stone is really the lowest tier golem i'd consider for a lumberjack, and i'm definatey considering Earth upgrading him.
Unfortunately I do have a catch-22 situation. I can either collect the saplings, but the Rammuncarpus won't be fast enough to plant the saplings, or I can just not pick up the saplings. I did try a straw gather golem, but even it gathers too quickly for the rammuncarpus to plant. I'll prob work on this later, but for now i don't need a huge amount of saplings.

This isn't bad. It uses the best of both worlds. Cutting down trees with only botania is a little.. interesting. The flowers you are using are definitely a bit easier to make than all the golem cores needed to do the same job. You may want to try a thaumium golem with a couple strength upgrades. The higher the strength, the faster the chopping. I used one in my thaumcraft/botania world, and it could fell a greatwood tree in just a couple minutes.

I know the stone golem is not the fastest for chopping trees. I have since given the stone golem an earth upgrade, and finding it more than sufficent for my needs. If I were using bigger trees, such as Greatwoods, or some of the bigger forestry trees, (or even vanilla giant Jungles/Spruces) I would say Iron or Thaumium would be more suited. I should also note I am being a little wasteful with the area of the Rammuncarpus, it has a larger range than I use, which can be extended further using mana.

I did find a way to pick at least some saplings up, by using a straw gather golem, and giving it a small maze to slow it down so the rammuncarpus has time to plant the saplings.

I feel like Golems are looked down upon, I personally always make my farms with them, I mean, why not? They don't require power to function, just some little modifications, a little wave of your magical bell and bang, forever working minions.

they can be quite derpy in their movement and behaviour, causing them to be not as reliable as other machines.

I find they have most trouble with non-full blocks, for instance Zombie Heads. Give them a reasonably flat, obstacle-free area and they often act very predictably.
