I've cut down 7 silverwood trees, but only the first and fifth have dropped any saplings at all. The TC3 wiki say they're suppose to drop 1-2 saplings. I can understand not getting any from some tree but not getting any from a majority make it feel like the drop rate is messed up.

No, For the first 4 I was breaking them by hand. I've been letting the despawn by them self for the last 3 because, while I knew that didn't affect vanilla tree, I though maybe it did for TC trees.

I've have found ... purely anecdotally that using the wand of excavation seems to give me more saplings then any other way I take out the leaves. While learning thaum I had three trees I was using to farm a mega node and was able to cut and replant while gaining saplings over all. All three would net 2-4 most times giving me a slow but steady stockpile. Then my save got corrupted and I had to start over but thats a whole different sad story.

I managed to get lucky and got 3 saplings from a single tree using the sickle. Was in a Mystcraft age and had gotten tired of the 500m walks between trees, so I just plodded along and chopped em down and sickled the leaves. Ended up leaving with something like 3 1/2 stacks of silver wood and 7 saplings after traveling over 3 km.

Speaking of, what's a good mystcraft setup to find silverwood trees :X My overworld sadly has a rather impressive lack of them and I don't want to explore it too much due to possible new world gen.

Edit: You might be on to something, every single tree I removed the leaves from using the excavation wand gave 1-3 saplings so far. every tree I've let rot....0

Just let another two trees rot and got 3 off of em, so about the same rate the op was getting em -_-

Might try making ages with the meadows biome. Minimal trees so they stand out better. Add in flat terrain and you'll have little trouble with Silverwood and Greatwood trees.

Doesn't help the distance, though considering their powers that isn't terrible.

Looks like there is a bug and they don't drop. We broke 5 and didn't get any saplings. The only way is to cheat them in until they fix it.

The only saplings I've managed to get were from mystcraft worlds before the aura spawns. Once the aura 'renders' the drop rate by my perception seems to tank significantly. In the overworld I've now replanted and such 10 instances of my node tree... and not single sapling.

Silverwood saplings do drop. They are very rare and this is intentional. You should not even expect one sapling every tree.

I cut down three, and got two saplings on the third. None on the first two.

my own experience based on chopping down about 50-ish trees is that you get a sapling about half the time. so the wiki would be wrong. But then that could simply be me being unlucky.

I've seen a guy on irc who got 0 in 18. I once managed to get 3 from a single one(Using treecapatitator). The numbers are all over the place. Honestly, this is more about psychology and statistical distribution than anything else. The drop is rare, therefore the occurrence is rare, therefore anything you do or don't do when the occurrence happens is given a special significance - even though there is none. Most tree drops have a percentual chance per leaf block to drop, I've seen the code for both vMC and IC trees and there is no special casing, it's the same rate for decay, breaking by hand, or whatever. It's illogical to assume it's different for silverwoods. Therefore I ask you to stop these "It happened twice to me this way, so it has to be that way". Either do some serious testing in creative, or look at the code, but please, enough with the misinformation.

Okay, I looked at the code

Greatwoods drop one sappling in 300 leaf blocks, silverwoods drop one in 500. There's no special casing, these drops are final no matter which way you break them.

Thank you!

Can a shearing turtle get a sapling drop / leaf block drop? I let a dual shearing turtle place/shear test run for hours last week and didn't see a single sapling drop, just bad luck or is this fixed now?

shearing preserves the leaf block, you only get saplings if you break the leaves. You'd need a digging turtle to do that.

In that case I'll just use a chainsaw as (at least it did with vanilla trees in the beta) it give you 2 chances to get a sapping per block (it give you the leaf block and sapping chance if the block wasn't user placed).

I was testing for that before takin' a look at the code, 600 leaf blocks and I haven't seen a sappling yet, but I do believe that it will work.
