SOLUTION: Turning off auto-save on the server with the op command "save-off" removed the lag spike completly, server is like new, stable and fast!

Hello.

Ok, im running a Mindcrack FTB server from my house with these specs:

Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 2.4GHz
4GB RAM
Windows 7 64bit
150GB Raptor Disk 10000RPM
7MB/s UP&Down (fibre optics)

Java 7, 64bit

and we are having some issues where very often, everything except the players, will stop for about a second, sometimes it seems like its a bit longer aswell. It is very notable when fightning monsters, because all of a sudden the npc will just stop and do nothing, and then after a second or so the npc will speed up to catch up (it tends to hurt). During this time, the player can move like normal, but can not hit the npc.

This stop lag is also notable when opening chests or machines as the stop lag occurs. Also, lately ive been noticing when eating aswell. I guess its notable when doing anything actually.

I have been keeping tabs on the server resource monitor, and neither the cpu or memory is spiking or struggling with load, at least not from what I can tell. I have tried running the server with 1gb RAM, 256MB RAM, the stop lag is still the same.

We usually are only 1-4 players on the server, so I would imagine the server would be fine with its current hardware. We also do not run any world anchor's (no quarry's). We had 3 quarry's once, but the server kept booting people out so we took the quarry's down and it was fine again.

I would appreciate any help with this, as its rather annoying. We are currently exploring Twilight Forest for the first time, and we have had some run ins with some minotaurs and its not very pleasant when they stop lag during charge.

Edit: Btw, the server isnt spewing out any errors or anything, except sometimes it is very hessitant to tell me it cant keep up, but ive seen this with all mc servers, even those without any lag issues.

I have been monitoring resmon a little closer, and noticed CPU spikes every half a minute or so, which seems to be the right timing when it comes to the stop lag we have been experiencing. I have seen other server hosts complain about mindcrack modpack being very cpu intensive, is there a reason for this? Are all the modpacks this cpu intensive or just the mindcrack one? I would love to find a fix for this if possible, I just hope there is something else to do but to get a fast single core cpu.

Edit: I cant remember the stop lag being there in the start, so im thinking someone must have built something, a machine or something, which makes the cpu spike for some reason. However, I have no idea how to figure out what.

All modpacks are CPU heavy, but it seems mindcrack more then all the other packs. Keep in min that the mods are ready, only not optimised yet. Forge is being worked on etc. Before the servers will run the way they should run we will be a few months further.

It doesn't have to be a machine (quarry) that causes the lags, it could be just all the machines and redstone things ticking at the same time thats causing the spike.

My problem is solved. What caused the cpu spikes was actually the auto-save function which was running on my server. When I turned it off (with "save-off") the stop lag was never to be seen again. Glasspelican was the one who told me this might be the case, so thank you very much for that! Now the server is running very stable and with no lag at all.
