If that's happening, it'll be a Forge thing. Nothing in vanilla does that, same as before.

And if Forge does add a system to allocate IDs, then the same system would work in any version of Minecraft. All the way back to Beta 1.7.3, or whenever Forge was created. It wouldn't be something that was impossible to do before 1.7.

I don't thnk that anyone has actually said that 1.7 would completely remove the ID conflict problem. No-one who knew anything about what they were talking about anyway. They have introduced one place where ID strings can be used instead of numbers. Command Block strings. That's it. I really am baffled where all this bizarre speculation about "the end of numeric IDs" has come from. Sure, maybe at some point in future there will be some magic that solves the ID conflict problem, and this is the first baby step in that direction. And it may be as simple as each instance getting a copy of the ID table from the server when it connects, and doing an on-the-fly re-map of server IDs to local IDs. But I don't think that Mojang have said anything of the like, CMIIW.

Has anybody noticed the small progression towards UUIDs in the latest snapshot? ;)

If that follows along with the UUID mechanism I know it will map the namespace MyMod:MyBlock to number that will make collisions with other IDs statistically unlikely, though not necessarily impossible. So add a straw to the optimists pack and let's see if we have this discussion in 1.9.

UUIDs? That's 128 bits! I would have thought that 32 was enough, but hey, nothing succeeds like excess. Wow. So the modders just generate random IDs, and there will never be a conflict - there aren't enough seconds left in the lifetime of the universe to make it statistically conceivable.

I know, we haven't even got 1.6 packs yet, and already I'm asking about 1.7. Flame on!

But there's a serious side to this post - since 1.7 will be getting a whole new biome, and therefore new world gen and hideous chunk transitions (as well as existing witch huts no longer spawning witches), is it worth actually skipping 1.6 and waiting for 1.7 before starting a new long-term world?

We have gotten 1.6 packs, just not from FTB.

My opinion is that FTB is not as good as people hyped it to be, it has constantly lagged behind in updates, it is definitely not the "tekkit killer" that Slowpoke labeled it.

BUt like I said that is my opinion, I know how fanboys get with tunnel vision.

If you search you can find some excellent alternatives to FTB.

You may ask why come on here then? Well this seems to be the new central hub for modded MC as far as community information is concerned.

The truth is if you wait around for FTB to update to 1.7 you will be sitting here most likely till next June... I would recommend looking up alternatives if you want to play current packs.

You can play Unfinished Beta Packs that have issues and mods removed and added constantly sure. I do this myself and love #RR and #Magicality! FTB prefers not to release untested packs and wait for mods to stabilize so they don't have to keep updating packs. So if you want bleeding edge, up to the minute packs you have 2 options.

1. Make one yourself and constantly update
2. Play Resonant Rise or another pack from another launcher.

If you want a super stable polished pack you have 1 option

Wait for the mods to stabilize and download a pack from a launcher.

Lost as always
As the size of the mod pack increases, the odds that it will contain bugs or glitches that are not easily fixed approaches unity.

Most of the FTB packs are very large... therefore they will almost certainly contain many bugs. However, this does not make the packs any less difficult to create. Quite the reverse in fact.
