Better Sugar Cane is a mod that gives various new uses to sugar cane. Such as:
  • Blocks (Compressed versions too!)
  • Enhanced tools (Making all materials useful![Mod support planned])
  • Food (The sugariest of cookies!)

Sugar cane rods.--(Changed recipe, only uses 4 sugar cane and 3 NORMAL sugar cane blocks.)

Recipes for tools

All items in v1.0

Tool info:
  • Iron: Does more damage
  • Gold: Super enchantable
  • Diamond: Fast speed.
All tools get a slight increase to all stats, and have a mining level of obsidian.

Find downloads at Curse Forge

1.1 -- Added sugar cookies, due to the high amount of sugar in them you have a 50% chance to get a speed II effect for 15 seconds when eating one

1.0b -- Made the recipe for the sugar cane rods actually affordable

1.0 -- Release

Although a bit sloppy, you can find the GitHub repo here

Do whatever, just give credit where due. (Yes you can use it in a modpack)(Cause I know someone will ask sooner or later)

So, it takes what looks like 3 Quintuple Sugar cane and 4 quadruple sugar cane to make 1 sugar cane rod... That's 203,391 sugar cane per rod. On top of that, the tools take blocks instead of ingots/diamonds? All that for a "slight increase to all stats" and an obsidian mining level... So... What's the upside of using these?

It actually is 4 Double and 3 Triple, You need 216 sugar cane per 2 rods. If you have a decent farm going it should be too much of an inconvenience. Though if enough people think that it's too expensive I'll nerf the requirements a bit.
The part you quoted shows the advantages there. If the tool you made is iron it will do much more damage (5 hearts on a sword), If the tool is Gold it will have a much higher enchantability (Efficiency IV, Fortune III, Unbreaking III with one enchantment), if you are using diamond it will have a much higher mining speed. All tools get a slight increase to all stats but certain materials excel in certain areas.

If it compresses similar to XU cobble/dirt/gravel/sand, 9 compressed equals one double compressed and so on, then 3 triple compressed and 4 double compressed would still be 2,511 sugar cane for per rod assuming the recipe only gives one.

Woops, did my math wrong, definitely nerfing that.

Alright, next update will be 4 normal sugar cane and 3 sugar cane blocks instead of the compressed ones. Though you'll only get 1 per recipe. (31 sugar cane per rod)

Thought it was important to make sure people can actually craft the tools so I went ahead and released a small update (1.0b) which makes the sugar cane rods much more affordable.
No foods have been added yet.

IMPORTANT: If you downloaded version 1.1 before or on 09/25/14 Download it again, I screwed up something when removing a ceartain mod I was planning support for which actually made it so the mod would not load on startup.

Also curse forge isn't letting me upload files... Yay!
