What is the bug:
If the player already has a full inventory (every available slot is filled), then cheating in items through NEI causes Minecraft to crash. This occurs in both Survival and Creative modes.
Note: I am using v1.8.0 of the Direwolf20 modpack. This bug form didn't allow that version as an option though...
