On reflection, a creeper got into my base a while before the upgrade. It's quite possible that it blew up the Slice'N'Splice and I never noticed. So it looks like this probably isn't an issue after all. Sorry for the false alarm.

Update: The energy cell appears to have appeared outside my house somehow. Still no sign of the Slice'N'Splice...
