It seems like expert mode adds recipe changes to introduce inter-mod interactions (which are great!), but it also introduces changes which just increase resource requirements. An obvious example is changing logs to produce 2 planks and planks to produce 2 sticks. Building a shaft of ladders...

Only(?) known method is to use a sludge boiler. To forestall the natural follow-up, the only way I know of to bootstrap rubber for MFR machines is via glue.

I might be misunderstanding what you're trying to do, but it if you use a dispenser pointing upwards it can be done with 2 pieces of redstone and a redstone torch: This can drop 2 items at once, to avoid this change it to use a redstone repeater (and one more piece of redstone) for a slight delay.

It isn't a general solution, but the super crafting frames work well for essences. Each essence goes in a barrel, and a crafting frame on the front provides the (primary) crafted resource. A benefit is this works for recipes with other shapes as well, down side is you have to set it up once...

The version of Buildcraft in this pack uses RF rather than MJ. What requires MJ? The Mek universal cables should be able to do the conversion though.

Make a charger. Unlike standard AE2 the recipe doesn't require charged certus.

There are slime chunks. One way to find them is by doing /seed then using http://chunkbase.com/apps/slime-finder.

You can get it from the fire bats in the nether, which seem somewhat common and have the courtesy to fly right up to you.

I'd like to try them out for other tasks but I can't get a blank Redstone Board to turn into a specific one. I place it in an assembly table but no option for a written one turns up in the right-side panel. Docs are sparse for the Buildcraft robots, has the way this is supposed to be done...
