    Saltpeter is generated biome specifically, i believe you can only find it naturally in deserts. I prefer however to quarry a "dense-ores" dimension which does not seem to have the biome specificity which I think comes from Extrabiomes XL

    Why should I start with beekeeping?

    It really depends on your reason for playing minecraft in the long run. If you are a "builder" type, then beekeeping is useful for stained glass. If you are the "caving/exploration" type, then the backpacks are seriously useful. Also wax is a nice replacement for cactus greens in the waterproof...

    Red Power is released.

    Railcraft adds the Saltpeter ore and another version of Sulphur, which are used to make gunpowder. It also adds things to dungeon/spawner chests such as creosote oil, wooden ties, etc...
