Before making this thread, I had a total of 6 GB allocated, but as the modpack description said 4 GB, I had lowered it. It had still crashed at 6GB, and as I only have a total of 8 GB installed, I cannot easily upgrade it, especially as I am using a laptop rather than a desktop.

After trying 10+ different modpacks (and all of them crashing), I finally managed to find at least a single one that will successfully launch without crashing: The FTB Invention modpack.

How do you manage to survive against the spiders though? I can't even make a wall fast enough before night arrives.

What I would really like to know is how people keep getting stone so fast, I keep dying before I manage to sift through enough dust to even get a furnace.
