Most mods should work. Aside from EVOC, we only encountered Thaumcraft 4's Golems not working and the mod's Runic Armor crashes other players on damage. Haven't had any problems with the other 136 mods. :)

Going south, you will usually fine more plains and praries that are flatter than the forested mountains you mostly encounter at spawn. Check the config files and tweak some of the noise values. They are commented and should explain themselves.
