I think it might be because there is a problem with v6 of the mindcrack pack which you are using correct? Some people are just saying wait for v7 If you haven't done much on the current map then remaking the map should help

Make sure java is up to date delete the mindcrack folder not the launcher (back up any worlds you might need) and ltry launch it again and connect

I would go for slime but if your going to start exploring a lot and want to make big machines then consider zombie
