What's the Alembic Ear in Thaumcraft 3?

I once watched one of Direwolf20's server play videos and while he was skimming through NEI to look up a certain recipe, I thought I saw an item listed called the Alembic Ear from Thaumcraft 3. I've been wondering, what's the Alembic Ear?

Anyone who knows what it is and how it works, please post it.

It's tuned to a note block and whenever a noteblock nearby is operated it emits a redstone signal

Just tested it.. you right click on the ear to set the note it will be tuned to... than you tune your noteblock to that tone. Now here is the cool part...it works from a long way away..I have my distance set to far and went till the quick light circuit I made was just barely in view, hit the note block and it lit up the light.

No clue how far it can go... but a long way
