And automation. For instance you can build an auto-mass-smelter with chestcarts and hoppers which distributes stuff and fuel and pulls out the products from a bunch of furnaces.

What about for transporting mobs? Minecarts are used for that a lot. But I agree, Minecarts should be faster than horses, it only makes sense.
Agreed. They (not coincidentally) look like something ripped straight from MoCreatures, which, while not a bad mod, has a large effect on the "feel" of the gameplay, making it feel a lot less vanilla and a lot less "pure".

Of course they look like they are ripped off of mo creatures, the author of mo creatures made them. Although I agree with you that horses seem vanilla breaking, I feel like vanilla players love the feature, just because it lets them move faster than you would normally be able to, something that vanilla does not do very well.

That's what my counselors always tell me. They don't seem to care for it when I laugh after they say that.
Lock them in a large room with no equipment and use a block ram to slowly push a wall into them from as far away as it can reach...until you crush the very life from their bones.
